I read a version of this recipe somewhere awhile back… I kinda remembered the details, and it sounded good, so thought I’d try to create something similar to what I remembered….  This is what I came up with, and it turned out really good. This is one of my “cooking for one” recipes, so double or triple the amounts for a family meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp blackberry preserves
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tsp prepared horseradish (not the sauce stuff)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 clove garlic – minced
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • shrimp for dipping

Method

Mix all ingredients in small bowl, chill until ready to use.

Notes

If you happen to not have, or don’t want to use ketchup, use 1 teaspoon tomato paste, 1 teaspoon cider vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon sugar (or your favorite sugar substitute) instead. I didn’t keep any ketchup on hand for quite a while because of the HFCS in it, but both Hunt’s and Heinz are making them with regular sugar now so I’ve have been getting those, at least until I come up with a recipe for making my own I really like.

I think the original recipe also had some minced jalapeño in it. I didn’t have any on hand at the time, and for the small amount I made, may not have been worth the effort. It also called for raspberry jam, but I don’t ever buy that cause I prefer blackberry…. they should be fairly interchangeable. Point is, try subbing in your favorite jelly or preserves.
